Clark K. Harshbarger (he/him)
For the last three decades, Clark has worked in and around agriculture—beginning with summers on his family farm in southern Ohio, which sparked a deep curiosity about soil. That curiosity led him to Montana State University to study horticulture and soil science, followed by 17 years as a Soil Scientist with the USDA-NRCS. There, he mapped and studied soils across public and private lands, eventually focusing on soil health, cover crops, and wetland identification.
Motivated to put his knowledge of land into practice, Clark left federal service to work directly with the land and community at Grassroots Farm & Foods in southern Ohio, raising pasture-based livestock using holistic management. It was there he came to understand regenerative agriculture as more than soil, it’s also about healing relationships with place, people, and self.
Today, as Director of Stewardship at Mad Agriculture, Clark supports farms and ranches across the West by helping producers design grazing systems, adopt perennial crops, secure conservation funding, and steward their land in ways that align with their values and long-term vision. He helps land stewards access resources, knowledge, and opportunities to continue on their regenerative journey—supporting both the business and the land they care for.
